The new Start was signed in 2010 and entered into force in 2011.

The agreement limits the number of nuclear warheads of both countries to a maximum of 1,550. The agreement also limits the number of intercontinental missiles, submarine-launched missiles and heavy bombers.

The new Start was a continuation of the Start I agreement negotiated during the Cold War.

The two countries negotiated for a long time to extend the New Start agreement, which expires in 2026, but Russia withdrew from the negotiations last fall.

The United States and Russia already disagree on what kind of nuclear weapons the agreement should cover.
