On Thursday, the Armed Forces told more about the fatal accident at Kebnekaise on Tuesday, when a soldier lost his life in an avalanche.

– The accident that occurred happened to a person from the reconnaissance force, during the work of attaching safety structures. The casualty was a very talented mountain specialist and alpinist and he also had the forecast to become one of the unit’s mountain masters, says David Engström, deputy battalion commander at a press conference on Thursday.

The exercise continues

The Swedish Armed Forces say that a number of investigations have been started and that they have reported the accident to the Work Environment Agency.

– Our thoughts and all our work are on supporting the relatives and on supporting and taking care of our employees, says Morgan Gustafsson, chief of staff K4.

The exercise around Kebnekaise will continue.

– We have chosen to continue the exercise in part. Some activities are suspended, other activities continue but we have adapted them. Partly after the accident that happened, but also after the conditions that have now become due to the fatal accident, says Morgan Gustafsson.
