There are numerous MMORPGs on the market. But which online role-playing games are particularly worthwhile in 2023? Are there new titles or do the old classics continue to dominate? We at MeinMMO will tell you in this list.
How were the games chosen? In this list, we’ve focused on picking the best titles. The focus was on the questions:
The result are these 10 titles that MMORPG expert Alexander Leitsch has put together. He himself has played each of these games for dozens and sometimes even thousands of hours.
World of Warcraft
developer: Blizzard Entertainment | platform: PC | release date: November 23, 2004 | Model: Pay2Play | combat system: Tab targeting
What kind of game is this? World of Warcraft is the most famous MMORPG in the west and is still very popular 18 years after its release. You create a character on the Horde or Alliance side and follow an exciting story that is told through quests and beautiful cinematics. You roam through dozens of areas that you can explore in the open world.
In the meantime, when creating your character, you can choose from 13 different classes and a total of 24 races, divided between the two factions. You then play your character either in the classic level areas or in one of the expansions at level 60 before you enter the latest expansion and can reach the maximum level 70 in it.
Dungeons, raids, dangerous world bosses and of course PvP battles await you in the mid- and endgame. The MMORPG relies on comic graphics that have been pimped up a bit over the expansions, but are still getting a bit old.
With each new raid, a race for world firsts begins. Then the best guilds fight over who defeats a boss first. Such a fight can last for days or weeks and is exciting to follow.
In November 2022, the latest expansion Dragonflight was released, which brought new areas, new story content, but also dragon flying into the game. Also praised were the changes to the crafting system and talents that went back more to the game’s roots. Dragonflight also keeps players hooked longer than recent expansions have managed to do.
Who is the game interesting for? WoW basically serves all types:
All types of players also benefit from the strong story and the large community of the MMORPG.
If you also think nostalgically of old times, you can fall back on WoW Classic. There is a slightly adapted version of 2005 and a remake of Wrath of the Lich King to choose from. The practical thing: You only need one subscription to be able to use all three versions.
Is there a catch? If you play WoW, you have to accept the comic graphics and tab targeting as a combat system. If you like to be action-packed and want to avoid attacks with an evasive role, you have to resort to another MMORPG.
In addition, there is only a very limited free version of WoW. There you can only play up to level 20 of 70. After that you need a monthly subscription and for the latest content you also need the Dragonflight expansion, which currently costs 49.99 euros.
Is it still worth starting in 2023? Definitely yes. WoW offers an all-round package that few other MMORPGs have available. In addition, the new class, the revised talent system and the current crafting ensure a good mood.
If you are looking for a strong MMORPG with tab targeting, you cannot avoid WoW or Final Fantasy XIV as an alternative. If you want to visit the most difficult dungeons and raids in the genre, you also have few alternatives to the genre leader.
