“Jumbo Floating Restaurant”, one of the landmarks of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, sank in the South China Sea.
In a statement made by the “Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises” company, to which the restaurant is affiliated, it was stated that the annual maintenance of the floating restaurant is quite costly.
In the statement, it was emphasized that although the restaurant, which was closed in 2020 within the scope of Kovid-19 measures, is not in service, it has to be maintained and this situation puts restaurant owners financially difficult.
It was stated in the statement that it was decided to move the restaurant to an area where maintenance could be done with less cost, and it was noted that the necessary procedures were taken and permissions were obtained for this.
SINK DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS
In the statement, it was stated that the floating restaurant, which started to be moved in the South China Sea on June 14, encountered “adverse conditions” while passing through the “Shisha” archipelago, known as “Paracel” the previous day.
It was stated in the statement that the restaurant started to tilt as a result of taking in water, and despite all efforts, it was stated that the restaurant sank yesterday.
In the statement, it was pointed out that the depth at the scene was at least 1000 meters, so rescue work was almost impossible.
MANY FAMOUS NAMES HOSTED
“Jumbo Floating Restaurant”, one of the symbolic structures of Hong Kong, hosted many famous names, including Queen Elizabeth II of England and actor Tom Cruise.
The nearly 80-metre-long restaurant has served Cantonese cuisine for over 40 years. (AA)
