According to the emergency services, the fire started in one of the basement storage rooms and caused all three stairwells and apartments to be filled with smoke. The residents had to be evacuated from windows and balconies. A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. During the morning, information came from the region that she is admitted to a care unit at the hospital in Västervik.
Rescue forces from Ankarsrum, Hjorted, Västervik and Vimmerby worked during the night with the fire, at 8 o’clock on Wednesday morning the operation was finished.
The police suspect that the fire is arson and classify the incident as aggravated arson. A technical investigation will be carried out.
Fire in pizzeria
During the night of Wednesday, a fire also started in a pizzeria in Braås, north of Växjö. Residents of the house had to be evacuated, but no one is said to have suffered physical injuries.
After about an hour, the fire was extinguished. The area is cordoned off and the police are investigating the incident as suspected arson. It is unclear what caused the fire.
