What about the secret cow level? Boss smiles and makes a clear announcement

In Diablo, 2022 has the “Secret Cow Level,” a hidden legendary location where the game was a little crazier than usual. How about that in Diablo 4? Diablo boss Rod Fergusson (Blizzard) says why it was deliberately avoided, at least for the release.

What is the secret cow level?

  • The “Cow Level” is a special secret place in Diablo 2 that can only be reached via detours. The “cow level” was first seen on April 1, 1999 and thought it was an April Fool’s joke. However, when Diablo 2 released a year later, players actually found access to the location on July 4th (via Blizzardwatch).
  • Countless cows run around the place and a cow king. Because a particularly large number of mobs can be found in one place here, the secret cow level is ideal for characters who specialize in area damage, for farming EXP and items.
  • Then in Diablo 3, the location came back as “Not the Cow Level” and enjoyed renewed popularity.

Boss Says Anyone with business acumen would have brought pets and wings to Diablo 4

What does Diablo say about the Cow level? In a lengthy video interview about Diablo 4, Diablo boss Rod Fergusson spoke on the subject. He said: You wanted to keep everything “close to the ground” in Diablo 3, so you also did without wings and pets, i.e. the two things that were particularly big in Diablo 3 and that you should definitely include in Diablo 3 from a marketing point of view Diablo 4 should have adopted:

  • The interviewer asks, “How about cows, Rod? Are you a cow guy? Let’s talk about cows.”
  • Fergusson laughs and says, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
  • He then explains: They wanted to keep everything “close to the ground” in the new Diablo. Diablo 4 should feel “authentic” and live up to the Gothic theme.

That’s why you don’t use wings and pets, the two particularly successful things in Diablo 3 that anyone with “a little business sense” would definitely have taken over in Diablo 4:

But we didn’t want to have 30 people in the village on launch day running around with angel or demon wings on their backs and a bunch of dogs or cats or whatever. That would have blown up the immersion.”

Diablo 4 doesn’t have a Cow level in Season 1, but maybe in later Seasons

For the same reason that they wanted to keep the game authentically dark, there wouldn’t be a secret level in Diablo 4 that people might be looking for.

“But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future.”

There are 2 very different things, says Ferguson with a smile, what you can do in Season 1 or what you can do in Season 21. It will be seen if this wisdom also applies to Diablo 4.
