Twilight creator wanted Henry Cavill for Robert Pattinson’s role – and it fell through out of sheer bad luck

Twilight creator wanted Henry Cavill for Robert Pattinsons role

With his role as Vampire Edward Robert Pattinson had his big break in the Twilight movies. If book author Stephenie Meyer had had her way, a different star would have played the character. Before the film adaptation, she wished for the later Superman actor Henry Cavill for the role. But nothing came of it.

Henry Cavill was too old to star in Twilight at the time

As Variety reports, Meyer wrote on her blog about the casting of Pattinson as Edward at the time that she was very happy with the decision. Few actors, in her opinion, would make it to look so dangerous and beautiful at the same time. Still, she adds wistfully:

The most disappointing thing for me is Losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now 24 years old. Let’s have a moment of silence to mourn…

Pattinson was on the shoot for the first Twilight movie, which was released in 2008 21 years old. Even if he no longer passes as a student for the story, his age was even more appropriate than Cavill, who was almost in his mid-20s by then.

Cavill later commented on this himself as a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast when asked if he Pattinson as competitors looks at:

Not at all because I didn’t know the film. I didn’t know they wanted to cast me and the internet wasn’t quite the tool it is now, so I didn’t find out until later. I thought: ‘Oh okay, that would have been cool.’
