The obstacles on Sweden’s path towards NATO – hear the foreign ministers tell

In the spring of 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Social Democrats began a historic swing on the issue of Swedish NATO membership.

– Then Cavusoglu replied that Turkey will welcome Sweden and Finland. And the president himself, Erdogan, had expressed this just a couple of days earlier in a conversation with the Finnish president, says then foreign minister Ann Linde (S).

But in the days before Sweden submits the NATO application, President Erdogan swung on the issue, and since then the obstacles have replaced each other. Here, two of the key figures, former foreign minister Ann Linde (S) and current foreign minister Tobias Billström (M), talk about events that were decisive.
