Steam shows the 12 games that made the most money in 2022 – we look at the best MMORPGs

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Steam has published its list of the 12 games that made the most gross sales in 2022. One MMORPG makes the list: the Asian import Lost Ark. For New World, the top MMORPG of 2021, it’s only enough for the top 100 – just like for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online achieve at least Silver.

What is this list? The list shows the 12 games on Steam that brought in the most revenue in 2022. However, there are no exact sales figures and no fine gradations. We can’t say who’s number 1.

The 12 games are therefore not in any particular ranking, they form the “platinum tier”, which are the top sellers.

Shooters dominate Steam’s top 12 list

These are the 12 games: With a few exceptions, the games correspond to the 12 most played titles on Steam 2022, which we presented yesterday on MeinMMO:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – The in-house shooter has been a hit on Steam for years
  • CoD: Modern Warfare 2: One of only three full price titles in the list
  • Apex Legends: The Free2Play shooter apparently makes a lot of money for EA with the cash shop
  • Dying Light 2: A bit of a surprise in the list, it was available at full price, but has now been reduced by half
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel card games are arguably still great sources of money, especially when they are associated with a strong brand
  • The 15 currently best MMOs and MMORPGs 2022

  • Elden Ring – for many the game of the year 2022
  • Destiny 2 – often declared dead, but the ruble is still rolling
  • Naraka: Bladepoint – The August 2022 game isn’t that on the mainstream radar
  • Monster Hunter Rise: Monster Hunter is a phenomenon in the West, and Monster Hunter World is still doing very well even after years and without fresh content
  • Lost Ark – The only MMORPG on the list that makes money from the cash shop
  • DOTA 2 – Like CS:GO a perennial favorite on Steam
  • PUBG – What used to be the biggest game in the world is still killing its chickens.
  • The 12 top sellers on Steam 2022.

5 MMORPGs in the top 100 on Steam – but Black Desert is missing

What about MMORPGs? In 2021, the then-new New World was the only MMORPG in the top list, despite having only a few months to make money. This year it still reached the bronze level and is still one of the top 100 games on Steam. Also in the category is Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is holding up surprisingly well.

New World was the huge sales hit among MMORPGs in 2021.

The Elder Scrolls Online trending downwards

Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online are both in the “Silver Tier”, somewhere between 25th and 50th place:

  • Both MMORPGs were still in the “gold tier” in 2021, i.e. among the top 24.
  • ESO was even still in the platinum tier in 2019, i.e. among the top 12.
  • Of the typical “big MMORPGs”, Black Desert is missing from the top 100 games list. For some time now it has seemed like Pearl Abyss is slowly phasing out the game, and Crimson Desert is working on a sequel.

Guild Wars 2 is also missing, but that too didn’t come to Steam until August 2022.

GTA 5 falls out of the top 12 – Warframe and War Thunder strong

What’s still exciting about other multiplayer games? Warframe, War Thunder, Rainbow Six Siege and Dead by Daylight make it into the top 25 at S.

GTA 5 Online and FIFA 23, legendary money earners, are not in the top 12 games, only in the top 25. GTA 5 was still in the platinum tier last year.

Maybe we’ll see some of these games on the list in 2023:
