A citizen protest calling for a Sarnia city councilor to be removed from office has been canceled, an organizer says.

The protest was originally scheduled for Monday at city hall, but makes little sense now after a special council meeting has been scheduled for earlier in the day, said Paul Woolley in an email.

“However, I have reached out by way of social media to encourage people to fill the council chamber for the proceedings,” he said.

It is not possible to remove a councilor from office under the Municipal Act, “nor do I believe in the end that can be the solution,” Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has said.

The mayor has said the city is reviewing options after Coun. Bill Dennis prompted an abrupt end to council’s March 11 meeting.

Dennis refused to yield the floor and angrily turned on other members of council amid a discussion about chamber security. Bradley then called for a motion to adjourn and council quickly voted in favor, passing no bylaws and leaving the city’s business in limbo.

Monday’s 10:30 am special meeting has been scheduled to pass those bylaws.

Sarnia’s procedure by law allows members who breach the rules of order to be removed from meetings, something Bradley has said he has never done in his 36 years as mayor.

Sarnia integrity commissioner Benjamin M. Drory has said he won’t investigate matters that occur during council meetings unless directed by council.
