Mexican president urges Washington to take responsibility

Three days after the fire that claimed the lives of 39 migrants in a detention center in Ciudad Juarez, a city located on the American border, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador again called on the United States to change its policy regarding migrants, believing that they are not addressing the root of the problem.

While the investigation is progressing and eleven migrants are still hospitalized in serious condition, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador went to Ciudad Juarez on Friday. Mexican authorities announced on Friday the arrest of a Venezuelan migrant, according to local media, who is responsible for the departure of the fire that killed 39 people last Tuesday in a detention center in this city located on the border with the United States. So far, the Attorney General’s office had announced the arrest of five people in the investigation opened for “homicide”, without however specifying whether this migrant was one of these people. According to the prosecution, the staff in charge of security at the center did nothing to open the cell.

Take care of the causes »

The Mexican president did not hesitate to attack the American authorities, indirectly responsible for the situation according to him. According to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, social programs must be funded in the countries from which most of these migrants come to reduce the migratory flow. The Americans want to solve social problems with the sole use of force and they do not deal with the causes “, detailed the Mexican president during a press conference, a few hours before his arrival in Ciudad Juarez.

And this is not the first time that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has criticized American policy in this area. But his calls remain in vain, as he explained, whether with former President Donald Trump or with Joe Biden, even if he recognizes that the latter, thanks to a temporary visa program, has made it possible to reduce “ considerably » the migratory flow.

Mexico has meanwhile spent $100 million on social programs in Central America, according to the Mexican president, who again calls on the White House to do the same.
