Martin Scorsese made the shortest alien invasion of all time (it’s over after 97 seconds)

Martin Scorsese made the shortest alien invasion of all time

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest directors of our time. However, that doesn’t mean he only releases 3.5-hour epics like Killers of the Flower Moon in theaters. On the contrary: from music videos to cameos in his daughter Francesca’s TikTok videos, his work now encompasses various forms of moving image art.

Commercials can also be found in his filmography. The 16-minute hotel advertisement The Audition, for which Scorsese received a budget of 70 (!) million US dollars in 2015, is infamous. Now he has filmed another commercial with the motifs of… classic and modern science fiction cinema is working.

Martin Scorsese ventures into sci-fi territory for a new commercial, but no one is interested in the aliens

The latest commercial in Scorsese’s oeuvre is titled Hello down there and was created for a US company that is best known for its website builders. In the 97-second video, Scorsese, as director, imagines an alien invasion that could hardly be more bleak.

The reason: People don’t notice anything about the flying saucers because they staring at their smartphones, tablets and laptops. The aliens have to get creative to get the attention of Earth’s citizens. Luckily, there’s a tool that can send a message to all screens.

Scorsese wouldn’t be Scorsese if he didn’t also think about it in a new directorial effort History of cinema would think. So he smuggles a few images from the Japanese sci-fi classic The Aliens Appear in Tokyo into the spot, as if he were giving us the next viewing recommendation.

Additionally, another video was released showing Scorsese and his daughter planning the project. However, it is not a real making-of; another part of the advertising campaignwhich is entirely focused on the personality of the filmmaker and the dynamic with his daughter.

Hello Down There was produced for release at the Super Bowl, which takes place on February 12, 2024. It’s not just companies that take the sporting event as an opportunity to get involved every year elaborate commercials to draw attention to their products. After the short sci-fi commercial detour: What film will Martin Scorsese make next?

It is questionable whether Scorsese will ever bring another science fiction film to the cinema. His current interests lie more in the past and present. After Killers of the Flower Moon, he could team up again with Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wager, the film adaptation of a shipwreck. For now, however, he is dedicating himself to the life of Jesus, whose story he explored in 1988 in The Last Temptation of Christ.
