“It was in one of the stacks. . . the oven was overheating,” CKFR Capt. Scott Hammond said when asked about the cause of the fire.

He added the oil from the stack caught on fire.

Jeanette Brown was driving on St. George Street while on her way to visit family when she witnessed the incident after 4:30 p.m.

“I heard a big bang and saw a lot of smoke come up between two buildings,” she said.

Brown added she just saw smoke, but no flames.

Soon after she parked her vehicle, Brown said fire trucks began arriving.

Brown, who provided photos she took of the scene to The Chatham Daily News, said firefighters “were up on the roof and bringing the hose lines up.”

She added some of the workers came out the plant and said the paint line caught fire.

Hammond said there were no injuries.

He said EMS was on scene as a precaution, which included checking the vital signs of firefighters as they came out of the building.

The plant produces torsion and stabilizer bars for the automotive industry.

Hammond said there wasn’t a damage estimate, adding it would primarily be associated with the loss of production while the operation was shut down.
