Brantford native appointed Justice of the Tax Court of Canada

A Brantford native has been appointed to the Tax Court of Canada.

Justice Edward M. Cook is one of two people named Monday in appointments by Arif Virani, minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Cook spent 20 years with the federal government at the Canada Revenue Agency, Department of Justice, and Department of Finance where he was the director general of the Tax Legislation Division.

He was an economist for the Province of Ontario and a research associate for the Canadian Tax Foundation prior to obtaining an law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.

Cook has extensive experience providing legal advice to public and private sector clients on domestic and international income tax matters, and in the development, drafting and implementation of tax legislation.

He has appeared as an expert witness before parliamentary committees, has spoken on Canadian tax issues, written books on tax research and income tax, and taught income tax at the University of Ottawa Law School.

At the time of his appointment, Cook was a partner at PwC Law LLP in Ottawa where he specialized in tax policy and tax dispute resolution.
