In southwest Iceland, a volcano began to erupt on Monday evening. It tells about it, among other things Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV. A state of emergency has been declared for the area.

The beginning of the eruption was recorded, among other things, on RÚV’s webcam, a video of which has been published on the X service. The eruption started after ten in the evening local time.

According to initial information, the eruption occurred near the town of Hagafell, which is located south of the capital Reykjavík.

Around Reykjavík, since the end of October, there has been a lot of seismic activity, such as earthquakes, due to which a volcanic eruption has been expected.

For example, the coastal town of Grindavík recently evacuated nearly 4,000 residents due to earthquakes. The earthquakes caused, among other things, sinkholes in the city. The Blue Lagoon spa, popular with tourists, has also been closed.
