A simple mistake ruins the amaryllis – and you can make it bloom on Christmas Eve

Amaryllis is sometimes called the queen of Christmas and you can understand that from its stately appearance. But how funny is an amaryllis that falls over because it has grown so tall?

The common mistake kills the poinsettia – this is how you avoid the flower wilting

How to choose the right Amaryllis

The job of succeeding with your amaryllis starts already in the shop.

– Sometimes plants are sold very cheaply and for a layman it can be difficult to decide whether it is something to bet on. The best way to ensure that you get a good amaryllis is to look at the size of the bulb and count the number of stems. It is also important that the amaryllis bulb is firm, says Malin Hidesäter at Blomsterfrämjandet to News24.

Amaryllis care – so it blooms on Christmas Eve

The amaryllis is a bit like a hyacinth. All of a sudden it has grown very fast and is falling over. But it doesn’t have to be like that, if you take care of your flower correctly.

First of all, it is important how you water, or rather not water.

– Water your amaryllis sparingly for best results. The onion does not like to get wet, so it is best to water on the dish or on the edge of the pot. The soil can dry out between waterings. Do not add nutrients because the onion is loaded with everything needed for flowering, says Malin Hidesäter.

From bud to bloom, it takes about three weeks, depending on where you place your amaryllis.

– The amaryllis likes to stand in light, otherwise there is a risk that the stems will become long and rickety. The warmer the amaryllis is, the faster it can be pushed into bloom. If you want to speed up the flowering, a warm place is therefore preferable, while a cooler location means that the buds and flowers last longer, says Malin Hidesäter.
