When the first English trailer for the new Super Mario Bros. film landed on the internet, a controversial discussion ensued. This was due to the voice of Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the English version. Compared to the heavily Italian original, the Guardians of the Galaxy star sounds pretty normal. In a recent interview, Chris Pratt has now commented on the criticism of his Mario voice.
Chris Pratt can understand criticism from Super Mario fans
According to Screen Rant, Pratt told Extra TV that Super Mario fans should watch the new animated film in its entirety before forming negative opinions about his vocal performance. For the star are probably even several sightings necessary:
Watch the movie and then we can talk. I really think that once you’ve seen the film, honestly, you probably have to watch it twice. Honestly, though, the answer is that this is a passionate fanbase, and I understand that I’m a part of it. This is the soundtrack of their youth and they don’t want anyone to come and cynically destroy it to make money off the film.
In the interview, Pratt takes the fans’ side and promises that the upcoming animated film will honor the beloved Super Mario template:
I totally understand that they don’t want that to happen and there were so many hearts and souls and minds working to ensure that didn’t happen. The film really honors the video game. It honors the world of Mario and is very promising, which could await us like a whole universe of this type of films in the next 10 years. They’re super nostalgic. They’re really fun. It’s illumination, so they know what they’re doing.
Compared to the original version, German fans should have fewer problems with this discussion. In Germany, Mario will be voiced by Leonhard Mahlich in the upcoming animated film. From the April 5, 2023 you can convince yourself of the new Super Mario Bros. film in the cinema.
