US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the relationship between the US and China is on a more stable footing after her four-day visit to Beijing.
– We believe the world is big enough for both our countries to grow and prosper, she told reporters at the US embassy in the Chinese capital on Sunday.
– Both countries have an obligation to responsibly manage this relationship, to find a way to live together and share global prosperity, she added.
Yellen summarizes the talks in China as “direct, factual and productive” despite “significant differences of opinion” between the countries.
– My bilateral meetings, which took a total of about ten hours over two days, served as a step forward in our endeavor to put the relationship between the US and China on a more stable footing, she said.
The purpose of the visit was to highlight issues linked to global economic development, as well as the importance of managing the relationship between the countries in a responsible manner, according to the US Treasury Department.
Last June, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. The meeting was seen by both countries as a breakthrough in frosty relations, which worsened in connection with the incident in February when the United States shot down a Chinese balloon over American soil. The US claimed that it was a spy balloon, which China firmly denied.
