Why did God of War Ragnarok lose the award?

Why did God of War Ragnarok lose the award

The Game Awards have been announced. Now it’s up to us to interpret why Ragnarok, which is expected by some, was not chosen as the best game.

There were two nominations for Game of the Year, the biggest award of The Game Awards, which took place the other day. Elden Ring us and the other is God of War Ragnarok. Both games competed head-to-head for a long time and Elden Ring won the Game of the Year Award. So why didn’t God of War Ragnarok get the award? Don’t think that God of War Ragnarok is a bad game while reading the content. On the contrary, I believe it is a very successful production. The many awards he has already collected are the most important indicator of this, but he did not receive the biggest award. The important thing is the reasons behind it.

Game of the Year doesn’t just look at the quality of the game

Let me tell you right away, like every year, Merlin’s Winner Games of the Year Survey will be with you in the coming days. In this survey, we will see the preferences of Turkish game lovers. Of course, I will vote in the poll. I do not write my personal preference in terms of not affecting the survey. However, I don’t think the result will be different from The Game Awards.

It was announced long before God of War came out. Even the PlayStation 5 was not on sale when it was announced. However, due to PS5’s marketing strategy, it was important to announce the games ahead of time and be a factor in the sales of the console. In addition, when the game went on sale, it went down in history as the fastest selling production in Sony history. But that wasn’t enough to make it the best game of 2022.

One of the biggest reasons behind this was said to be the changes in Kratos. The firm was accused of causing the softening of women and LGBTQ developers Kratos, which it recently included. Kratos, who has always been extremely harsh, behaved more humanely in Ragnarok, but a part of the audience was upset. In addition, the black Angrboda character, which was seen as a move to support diversity and prevent racism, also drew the reaction of the racist community. Although this does not mean that they are right, they were added to the minus point of the game.

Another point is the extreme emphasis on storytelling in the game. One of the factors that brings negative points is that the fight cuts the action and focuses on telling something, even in the middle of nowhere. The story of God of War has always been at the forefront. However, the excessiveness of this narrative in Ragnarok also disconnected the players from the gameplay.

When we add them side by side, Ragnarok will have attracted the reaction of gamers, they did not consider it appropriate to be in the first place. Also, what is that Thor? Does the game coincide with Thor’s emotional collapse? While waiting for a burly, muscular Thor, the character presented also got on my nerves personally…

Without forgetting, Ragnarok was criticized on Metacritic after the award ceremony and its player rating dropped to 7.9. Elden Ring, on the other hand, has a player rating of 7.7.
