A surprise hit has been delighting shooter fans on Steam for two weeks now

Gray Zone Warfare was released quite suddenly on Steam with just a day’s gap between announcement and release. At first the fans were skeptical, but now it’s clear: the game is well received.

What kind of game is this? Gray Zone Warfare is a tactical shooter that could best be described as a mix of DayZ (without zombies) and Escape From Tarkov. The shooter clearly focuses on realism and tactics. PvPvE fights and looting take place in a large, open world.

In keeping with the Tarkov principle, you are repeatedly sent to the map to complete various missions and then escape alive again.

The game world is an island in Southeast Asia that has been quarantined after a mysterious event. Three military companies were tasked with uncovering the secrets surrounding the event.

Many players probably found the concept of the game interesting. The game has already achieved success on Steam, as the numbers show.

It’s been two weeks since Gray Zone Warfare was released, here you can see the trailer again that surprised everyone:

How did the launch of Gray Zone Warfare go? Gray Zone Warfare was released as a surprise after Escape from Tarkov experienced the biggest shitstorm in its history. An announcement trailer was uploaded just a day before the actual release and the game still managed to generate enough hype to launch well on Steam.

The start of the game went very well. In the first two days the game sold 400,000 units (via millenium.org). Even more than two weeks after the launch, according to SteamDB, almost 20,000 players are still playing the game at the same time, even if the number of players has been falling almost steadily since the release.

How is the game received by the players? The players are a bit conflicted. Due to the game being released too early, many fans are missing out on content, even if what is already there is well received. The game is not well optimized and many fans complain about the performance issues.

GG writes in his review on Steam: “For an early access title, you can have fun here. The foundation is solid and I’m excited to see how the whole thing will develop further.”

Señor L. Wo counters on Steam: “The gameplay itself is really fun. However, the performance on medium settings is really bad even with a 3080 and 12900k. The performance MUST be better. […]“

What is planned for the future? Gray Zone Warfare is currently still in Early Access. Players also have the opportunity to pass on their feedback to the developers and thus participate in the development of the game. We would like to work on many points for the future:

  • a larger, complete map with new biomes and locations
  • a toxic epicenter in the middle of the map with stronger enemies
  • improved AI
  • Factions and progression systems as well as reputation
  • Revision of the quest system and main and side missions
  • Gray Zone Warfare is still in the early stages of development. But if you are interested in the game and are thinking about buying it, you should first look at the review by shooter veteran Fabian Siegesmund: “It’s still relatively shit, but it’s surprisingly a lot of fun” – German shooter expert draws conclusions about Gray Zone Warfare
