Various parts of Greece have seen violent protests as a result of Tuesday’s devastating train crash.

43 people were killed and nearly a hundred injured in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train near the city of Lárisa.

Due to the collision, several train carriages derailed and the carriages also caught fire. At least two train cars were completely destroyed in the collision.

Protesters clashed with police near the headquarters of Hellenic Railways, the Greek state-owned railway company, in the capital, Athens.

Demonstrations were also seen in Thessaloniki and Lárisa.

The protesters blame the train accident on the Greek authorities, who have been warned for years about the poor condition of the railways and train stock.

According to the Union of Railway Workers of Greece (you will transfer to another service) the cause of the accident was that the safety systems did not work.

The authorities, on the other hand, blame the accident on human error and have filed charges against the manager of the Lárisa station.

Greek railway workers have announced that they will go on strike today, Thursday, due to the accident.

Greek Minister of Transport Kostas Karamanlis has divorced. He said that he bears responsibility for the fact that “the authorities have not managed to repair the country’s railways for a long time”, which, according to him, do not meet the requirements of the 21st century.
