On social media, the people of Växjö discussed on Thursday morning whether the bell could ring was a warning from the church, as it lasted for almost an hour.
– It is unfortunate that it creates anxiety and fear. In our consciousness we know that church bells have a strong signal value. Historically, the bells have rung in times of unrest and war, and when the bells ring for forty minutes, it of course creates thoughts, says the pastoral director Katarina Friberg.
Funeral break
A technical error in the computer program that schedules the clock is believed to be behind the unusual nightly bell ringing.
The cause of the IT crash connects the church to a “funeral break”. According to the church, this has not happened before.
– The church bells will not ring at strange times or strange reasons in the future. This is a one-time event, says Katarina Friberg.
