US attacks targets in Syria – at least 13 dead

Targets in western Iraq, near the border with Syria, were also attacked on Friday. All targets are said to have links to groups supported by Iran. According to the US military’s Central Command, 85 targets have been attacked, targeting Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and militant groups with ties to Iran.

On X, formerly Twitter, Central command writes that the attacks took place from the air, and affected both command centers and warehouses for drones.

The attacks are said to have been carried out against, among other things, targets in the region of Dayr al-Zor (Deir Ezzor) in Syria, AP writes.

Coordinated attacks

According to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the US strikes have been carried out against targets in the eastern part of Syria, and that at least 13 “pro-Iranian” militiamen have been killed.

The American attacks were carried out through coordinated efforts with multiple weapons.

Three US soldiers were killed in the January 28 attack on the US military base Tower 22 near the border with Syria. US President Joe Biden then said that the US would “respond” to the attack. Iran was indirectly identified as complicit in the attack.

Memorial for the fallen

As media reports abounded about the attacks, US President Joe Biden was at a memorial ceremony at Delaware Air Force Base for the three US soldiers killed in the attack in Jordan.

Thereby, the crisis in the Middle East risks escalating further. The US has previously attacked the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen, which in turn has attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea.
