A man in his 70s died of hemorrhagic shock after receiving the wrong care when he sought help for acute pain in the gastrointestinal tract.

The man sought emergency care in Sörmland in the fall of 2023 after suffering severe chest and abdominal pains. Several possible diagnoses were discussed as the man had a very low blood count and an urgent gastroscopy was planned for the next day.

Despite blood transfusions during the night, the man’s condition deteriorated and he died of hemorrhagic shock in the morning. The autopsy showed bleeding varices in the esophagus.

The patient is considered to have suffered a serious medical injury when emergency treatment was not instituted. Several deficiencies in communication between different professions and different clinics have emerged in the region’s mapping.

The incident has been reported to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (IVO) according to Lex Maria by the chief physician at the hospital in question, Region Sörmland writes in a press release.
