In the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, many people took to the streets after the news that the mayors were kidnapped.

Ukrainian authorities said that Fedorov was abducted on Friday, blindfolded, and shared a video.

Zelenskiy said that Fedorov was “a mayor who bravely defended Ukraine and its people” and added:

“This shows the weakness of the invaders.

“They want to physically eliminate representatives of legitimate Ukrainian local governments.”

Melitopol, one of the small cities in the southeast of Ukraine, was one of the first cities captured by the Russians.

Fedorov told the BBC this week that his municipality would not cooperate in any way with the Russians, saying that some of his staff had been exiled by Russian forces.

Protests have been held every day since Russia took over the city.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the town hall on Saturday demanded Fedorov’s release.
