This is how you keep the mice away this spring – this is what you should avoid

When the summer cottages are opened again, small rodents can find their way inside and hide from the winter cold. How to get rid of these involuntary tenants? Nyheter24 has compiled tips that make the mice move.

Now the Swedish people are starting to open up their summer cottages in preparation for the season and over Easter, many people go to their country houses to prepare for the summer.

But with spring, the small rodents also come out and can become unwelcome tenants. News24 have found out how you as a homeowner can keep the mice away in the best way.

Here’s what you can do outdoors:

  • Close holes in the foundation of the house.
  • Put metal mesh on cavities in the foundation and valves with a mesh width of no more than 5 mm and wire thickness of at least 0.7 mm (stainless steel, copper or brass).
  • Make sure the grass around the house is cut short.
  • Do not plant bushes and trees near the facade.
  • Avoid climbing plants against the facade (rodents can climb).
  • Do not stack firewood, garden furniture or other things to be stored in winter next to the facade.
  • Do not feed birds.
  • Make sure that there are lids on garbage containers, that any compost is taken care of and that it is placed a significant distance from the house.
  • Keep clean under balconies and low balconies. Debris provides protection for the rodents.

    • You must do this indoors:

  • Keep an eye on the wind. Cardboard boxes with clothes are excellent places to live.
  • Keep the basement clean. Place boxes on shelves.
  • Make sure food is not in front of you. Empty the pantry in the summer cottage.
  • Put candles in boxes, otherwise they are food for rodents.
  • Place mattresses and sofa cushions on high in the cold summer cottage.
  • Make sure that penetrations, for example under the sink, are tight. Something that is usually forgotten are the lead-throughs for element pipes.
