This is how the women at the Hinseberg Institution celebrate the New Year: “The usual is…”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

At Anstalten Hinseberg, some of Sweden’s most dangerous women are serving their sentences. Criminals known to the media who are or have been in Hinseberg are Jonna Henningssonwho was convicted of the murder of his love rival, the runaway Lillemor “Hinsehäxan” Östlin and Martina Kveldstadwhose time in prison has been fringed with warnings.

But just because one is serving a sentence does not end the traditions. News24 has previously written about how the women at Hinseberg celebrate Christmas, you can read more about it here.

– It is always a special situation and heavy in many ways to be deprived of liberty, and the long weekends do not make it any easier. You are perhaps more reminded than on other weekday evenings that you are currently deprived of your liberty and cannot be close to your relatives, have Adrian Russodeputy director of correctional services at Hinseberg, previously told Nyheter24.

But when the intervening days have passed, the Christmas food has been eaten and the year is drawing to a close, it is time for another popular celebration, namely New Year’s Eve. And what does it look like when you sit behind bars?

Here you can read about how inmates at Kumla celebrate Midsummer.

Just like on Christmas Eve, the inmates, like many others around the country, are off from any occupations and jobs. Instead, the day is often spent in the wards or with walks and exercise.

– For the wards that have self-management (then inmates plan and prepare the food themselves eds. note) they usually spend a little extra time on the food that day, and the wards that do not have food provided by us, get a New Year’s plate just like Christmas plate, says Adrian Russo and continues:

– Just on New Year’s Eve, we do not receive any visitors. It is possible to call and have Skype conversations with their relatives.

For many around the world, the stroke of twelve is associated with fireworks, toasting and partying. That’s not quite how it looks for the women at the Hinseberg prison, as it falls on what is known as 24-hour rest.

Then all the cells are locked for the night, and the inmates must be alone in their living quarters.

– The usual thing is, as on the outside if you live alone or for other reasons can’t be with close friends and acquaintances, that you follow the various TV broadcasts and ringing in the new year, concludes Russo.
