The time machine is rightly one of the stories that are indispensable in sci-fi libraries. The book platform Goodreads places Wells’ work among the most influential sci-fi and fantasy books at all.
Incidentally, the author’s descendant, Simon Wells, sat in the director’s chair for the 2002 film adaptation. Under his supervision, images were created that truly do justice to the visions of the original. Practical sets, props and especially the mask work for the Morlocks and Eloi – in their time Oscar-nominated – bring the bleak future to life. The film, which flopped at the time, more than deserves a second look.
