the UGTT maintains pressure on the government after the legislative

In Tunisia, after the snub of the first round of the legislative elections of December 17 and which finally attracted only nearly 11% of voters, calls for a return to dialogue have multiplied. The UGTT, the powerful trade union federation, calls for its part to draw up a roadmap to save the country from the crisis.

For the UGTT, it is more than ever the time to recall its position and exert maximum pressure on President Kaïs Saïed to revise his policy and discuss with the parties. The central trade union does not propose new ideas. She reiterates her call for an inclusive dialogue that will lead to a roadmap to break the current impasse. She also wants the second round of legislative elections scheduled, in principle, between the end of January and the beginning of February to be postponed to a later date.

We did not give a blank check to Kais Saied affirm several trade union leaders convinced that a single person will not be able to get the country out of the rut.

Call for more consensual reforms

The UGTT has always refused to reform the electoral law and the Constitution without prior consultation. She is angry with the president for not having listened to her, and for not having taken into account the amendments demanded for the new constitution.

All this in a context of very strong tension between the Head of State and the trade union federation. The president of the UGTT has not been received at the presidential palace for several months. Now that Kaïs Saïed’s political project is strongly affected by the electoral disavowal, that he must do everything so that the second round is no longer shunned by the voters as was the case during the 1st round, the UGTT seizes of the occasion: she raises her voice to demand more consensual and more democratic reforms. It must therefore go through a dialogue.
