The safest route to evacuate Finns from Sudan is being

Finns are constantly in contact.

According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, there are more than ten Finns in Sudan. Foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (green) tells that they are constantly being contacted.

– They are in a relatively safe place. Of course, the crisis in Sudan is so deep that every day can change this security situation, says Haavisto.

The Sudanese army and the opposing RFS forces have been fighting for control of the country for a week. The parties agreed on a three-day ceasefire yesterday, but it has been repeatedly violated.

Many countries are preparing to evacuate their citizens from Sudan. According to Haavisto, Finland is holding discussions with key European actors, the UN and the United States, about the possibility of evacuating Finns as well.

– At the moment, we are finding out what is the safest route both to the meeting place and out of the capital Khartoum.

According to Haavisto, it has been possible to evacuate people from Khartoum by road in the direction of Ethiopia. Saudi Arabia has evacuated its own citizens by sea.
