The Riksdag voted through the controversial gender identity law

The vote ended with 234 members voting yes and 94 no, while 21 were absent.

Among other things, the law is about making it easier for people to be able to change their legal gender. The change in the law has been controversial and created divisions within some parties.

“It’s deplorable”

After the vote, SD leader Jimmie Åkesson (SD) was among the first to leave the chamber to express his dissatisfaction.

– I think it is deplorable that people so readily vote through a proposal that obviously lacks support among the population.

– I think it is a decision that needs to be torn up.

The Center Party’s party leaders Muharrem Demirok and Johan Hultberg (M), on the other hand, were pleased with the result.

– Sweden finally has a modern gender identity law, it affects very few of us in everyday life, but for those who are affected, it will be a completely new condition for having a functioning life, said Muharrem Demirok.

Ellen Juntti (M), who voted no, chose to go against the party line. She said that it is the first time in roughly thirteen years that she did not like the party.

– I just can’t vote for 16-year-olds to be allowed to change their legal gender. I think it’s wrong, it’s too young.

The Social Democrats’ Patrik Björck also went against the party leadership and voted no.

The Tidö collaboration

The Sweden Democrats and the Christian Democrats are the parties that have been against the bill. and many questions have been asked about how it will affect the Tidö collaboration.

Jimmie Åkesson said afterwards that it doesn’t really mean much, but that he was disappointed with the parts of the government that pushed the issue through.

An expected answer, according to SVT’s domestic political commentator, Elisabeth Marmorstein.

– The Tidö parties have a long list of points they must implement. And they stick to it, this is not something that would threaten the tidous cooperation. This is an important issue for some, of course, but it is a peripheral issue, one might say, when compared to the major societal problems.
