The military alliance NATO plans to send 700 more peacekeepers to northern Kosovo, where the Serbs have demonstrated for the third day.

NATO peacekeepers are still protecting the town hall of Zvecan in northern Kosovo on Wednesday.

The problems go back to the Serbian boycott of the April regional elections. As a result of the boycott, a representative of the Albanian minority became mayor in four Serb-majority cities.

In the demonstrations that started on Monday, 30 peacekeepers and more than 50 Serbian demonstrators were injured. After this, the military alliance NATO decided to strengthen its forces in the region.

NATO currently has around 4,000 peacekeepers in Kosovo. The military alliance announced that it would send an additional 700 peacekeepers to the country, but did not reveal the date of arrival of the additional troops.

Kosovo became independent from Serbia in 2008, and since then relations between the two countries have been tense. For example, Serbia has not recognized the state of Kosovo.

Serbia strongly supports the ethnic Serbs living in Kosovo.
