The police on the shooting in Uppsala: Many hovered in mortal danger

A boy was injured and taken to hospital in connection with the shooting that occurred in Uppsala on Midsummer’s Eve.
A bus was also hit by shots – according to witnesses, between 20-30 shots were fired, which the police confirm.
Mathias Rutegård, press spokesperson at police region Mitt, believes that the incident was associated with great danger to the public.
– One person has been hit, but there are many who have been in mortal danger, he says.

It was at 17:40 that the police were called to the Gottsunda area in Uppsala after receiving several calls about a shooting. At the scene, the police were able to determine that shots had been fired with some form of firearm. A boy with gunshot wounds who was taken to hospital was also found at the scene.

On Saturday morning, the boy’s condition was still unclear.

Associated with great danger to the public

According to Mathias Rutegård, Friday’s shooting was associated with great danger for people who were in the area.

– It is associated with a very serious danger to shoot in this way where there are people, he says.

It is being investigated whether the boy was a target

It is currently unclear whether the boy was a target or not, but according to the police there is a lot of evidence that he was not.

– We are continuing to investigate, but there is much to suggest that he was not, but we have not clarified the entire course of events. The investigative measures continue during the day to bring clarity to it, says Mathias Rutegård.

They will also continue with door knocking, witness interviews and technical investigations during Saturday. According to Mathias Rutegård, it is currently a difficult environment – not everyone wants to answer the police’s questions and it is believed that several people are inside with more information than what is shared with the police.

There is currently no information that Friday’s shooting has any connections to the police action that took place in the Sunnersta district in Uppsala on Thursday evening.

Too early to confirm or deny gang conflict

At the moment, the police cannot either confirm or deny whether Friday’s shooting is connected to any ongoing gang conflict.

– It is something that we always have in our back pocket when something like this happens, but it is too early to confirm or deny it, says Mathias Rutegård.

A preliminary investigation into attempted murder, aggravated weapons offense and causing danger to others has been launched, TT reports. No one has yet been arrested in the case.
