Does your smartphone’s spell checker take a little too much liberty and sometimes even put you in embarrassing situations? Fortunately, you can deactivate it to write as you wish.
What a wonderful invention the spell checker integrated into our smartphones is! Thanks to it, we often avoid appearing ignorant by writing in approximate French and we also save time predicting words. Practical, but not 100% effective. We no longer count the “buzzards” instead of “kisses” who have been swarming our missives for many years. When the proofreader replaces one verb with another, a text can take on a completely different meaning.
And sometimes, corrections made in messages sent too quickly can cause situations that are, if not comical, embarrassing to say the least, with substitutions that are embarrassing to say the least. If the message is addressed to a loved one, the blunder remains harmless, and even funny. On the other hand, in the professional world, a poorly corrected text can lead to misunderstanding or even discomfort, with more harmful consequences. Also, if you are tired of the bad tricks that your smartphone’s spell checker can play on you, you can deactivate it and regain full control over what you type on the keyboard.
With an Android smartphone, the automatic correction is buried quite far in the device settings. Access the Settings from Android, then choose System > Languages and input > On-screen keyboard Then Gboard (Google’s default keyboard). Finally, tap Text correction and, in section Correction turn off the switch Autocorrect.
iOS also allows you to disable iPhone autocorrect. However, you can keep the prediction displayed to save a little time when entering messages. Meet in the Settings of iOS, then in General and finally Keyboard. Flip the switch Autocorrect in inactive position.
However, you do not have to completely deactivate the spell checker on your smartphone, because despite its few blunders, it can be of appreciable service to you. You can thus teach him to correctly write certain words of your choice that he persists in correcting. On Android the operation is carried out in the menu Languages and input through the option Dictionary Then Dictionary staff. All that remains is to indicate your word. On iPhone, the method is less flexible since iOS immediately integrates words entered repeatedly that it does not know. You can then reset the dictionary from the menu General > Reset > Reset dictionary. It is also possible to add shortcuts to enter the words of your choice from the menu General > Keyboard > Replacement.
