Preparations for the next legislative elections are accelerating on the left side, where we are not far from a total alliance in view of the decisive elections in June. The agreement between La France insoumise and the French Communist Party has just been made official. The PCF joins the LFI formation of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the ecologists of EELV. There remains the PS, with which negotiations are continuing.

With our special correspondent at PCF headquarters in Paris, Aurelien Devernoix

We can say of the new alliance on the left that it is taking shape: like the ecologists on Sunday, it is very largely that the national council of the French Communist Party voted this Tuesday, May 3 in favor of participation in what is called now the New Popular Ecologist and Social Union: 120 votes for, 25 votes against, and 13 abstentions.

The PCF got what it wanted, 50 constituencies, sixteen of which were winnable, and the party still has some political leeway, especially for campaigning. But it was hard, the negotiations even almost collapsed Monday evening in the face of a proposal deemed unacceptable. The communist emissaries slammed the door before a phone call, very late at night, finally put everyone in agreement.

The PCF now hopes that the Socialist Party will also be part of the party, because, according to one of its leaders, the electoral dynamic for the left will have difficulty taking off if the discussions fail between LFI and the PS. There remain sticking points between the Socialists and the rebellious, in particular with regard to a Parisian constituency coveted by the two parties.

The rebellious, however, want to be confident, their chief negotiator adding nevertheless that the discussions would end this Tuesday evening, agreement or not.
