The lava has reached Grindavík – residents are evacuated: “Despaired, sad and worried”

The lava has reached Grindavik residents are evacuated Despaired

Lava has reached Iceland’s Grindavík since another volcanic eruption occurred north of the coastal town on Sunday morning.

Halldórsdóttir, who has lived all his life in Grindavík, was evacuated with his family – and eight horses – back in November after several earthquakes and the risk of volcanic eruptions. They haven’t slept in their home again since.

After the eruption in December – whose lava did not reach the city – Halldórsdóttir expected another eruption.

Even so, the new eruption comes as a cold shower.

— That Grindavík, says Halldórsdóttir.

Might never come back

On Saturday, the family was back in the house doing basic cleaning – she knew they wouldn’t see the house again for a long time.

— I fear that I will never live in Grindavík again. It hasn’t sunk in yet. Now we live one day at a time.

Klara Halldórsdóttir and her family have been forced to flee their home in Grindavík. Huge uncertainty

Swedish Jenny Kristinsson from Landskrona is visiting Iceland. When TT talks to her, they drive towards Keflavík and see smoke from the volcano in the distance.

Her husband’s family comes from Grindavík. Everyone has been forced to leave their homes.

Kristinsson describes a great powerlessness.

— They are despairing, sad and worried. No one knows if it will ever be the same again.

Although the Grindavík residents are now scattered, both Halldórsdóttir and Kristinsson believe that the difficult times have brought the residents closer together.

“We all live in enormous uncertainty and uncertainty about the future,” says Halldórsdóttir.

— The people of Grindavík are united in this sad matter. They are strong and take care of each other. I am proud to be close to people who are like them, says Kristinsson.
