Mild air from Southern Europe is in a wrestling match with the cold that has had its grip on Sweden during the spring.

Just in time for Valborg, the mild air seems to knock the ice cold to give us temperatures of up to 20 degrees.

– I will be happy, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

Temperatures throughout the country are unusually low for the time of year and are now between two and eight degrees below normal.

In northern Norrland, the thermometer has dropped as low as minus 20 degrees in recent nights.

– The warm air from southern Europe struggles with the arctic air coming from the north. It has a tight grip on the country, but the mild air is trying to take over, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.

So far, the mild air has lost the wrestling match against the icy cold – but just in time for Valborg, it looks like there will be a shift.

– Around April 28-29, it looks like it will get warmer. If the forecasts we see now are correct, it will be around 16–17 degrees in southern Götaland. If it is also sunny enough on those days, temperatures can reach 20 degrees.

Gloomy long-term forecast

Even in Svealand, the mild weather will offer pleasant Valborg temperatures.

– It will be mild in Svealand where it will definitely be double-digit weather, around ten to 15 degrees warm. In southern Norrland it will also be quite warm, just under double digits. They could fight their way up to double figures.

In northern Norrland you can expect temperatures around five degrees.

– It will go from cold to more normal weather. But now the normal will feel really warm. I’m happy with the little lightening.

But when Lasse looks at the long-term forecast, he notes that the luck will not necessarily be long-lasting.

– It may be that the heat stays until the first of May. But the forecasts look a bit half-baked for the first two weeks of May. I wish there was a heating budget. But we meteorologists usually say that the weather has no memory. It doesn’t remember what it did in the spring.
