The government proposes clearer rules for elections to the Sami Parliament

The government proposes, in a bill to the Riksdag, amendments to the Sámi Parliament Act and the Act on the Processing of Personal Data in Operations with Elections and Referendums.

“The changes are of an electoral technical nature and aim to make the rules on elections to the Sami Parliament clearer and more similar to those that apply to general elections,” they write in a press release from the Ministry of Culture.

One of the novelties is that a protection is introduced for designations, for example party names, which is similar to the protection for party designations in general elections.

Another change is that the rules on the procedure in connection with the voting and during the counting of votes are supplemented and clarified. For example, a ban on propaganda in the polling station is introduced.

“A number of changes are also proposed that aim to simplify the determination of voting rights and eligibility in Sámi parliamentary elections.”

The bill is to be submitted to the Riksdag next week and the changes to the law are proposed to enter into force on 1 August.
