Stop smoking or eat healthier, what will be your good resolutions for the year 2021? Health crisis and confinement oblige, sport will be more than ever at the heart of your concerns next year, as will the need to spend time with your loved ones; two things that have been particularly missed by all of us in this year of the pandemic.

Never have the French felt the need to take care of their health so much, and even more so to be closer to their loved ones and their family. Like last year, it is the fact of practicing a regular physical activity which is at the top of the good resolutions of the French (37%), but this is a record (+2 points compared to to 2019) which fits into the very specific context of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the latest barometer from the French Federation of Physical Education and Voluntary Gymnastics (FFEPGV), those under 35 are even more likely to want to take care of their body in 2021 (41%).

Despite the home sport boom, which should increase in 2021, physical activities have been particularly missed by the French this year. More than two-thirds of them (67%) say that the pandemic has made it difficult for them to be able to practice a sport, and three-quarters of the respondents even confide that this has had “at least one negative impact“on their physical and psychological well-being, even on their general state of shape.

A situation which also seems to have affected women more than men. More than six in ten (62%) say it has affected their physical well-being (vs 55% of their male counterparts), 59% their psychological well-being (vs 42% of men), and 44% cite a impact on their social relations.

These figures reflect that the crisis has completely changed the place of sport and that we must take this into account in what some will call ‘the world after’. The sport of tomorrow must be renewed and evolve to respond to what the French express through our Sport and Health barometer“, comments Patricia Morel, President of the FFEPGV.

    The family, a priority

Many French people have not been able to see their loved ones for nearly a year, and who have sometimes found themselves isolated during periods of confinement. Faced with this ordeal, the family returns to the center of everyone’s concerns. This is evidenced by the second place attributed to the fact of “spend more time with family“in this ranking of 2021 good resolutions with 29% of the vote, or 8 points more than in 2019. People aged 60 and over make it a particular priority in anticipation of the new year (37%).

Down by one point compared to the same time last year, having a more balanced diet completes this Top 3 (22%).

This survey was carried out by the IPSOS institute for the FFEPGV among 2,004 people aged 16 and over, from December 10 to 15, 2020.
