The 10 most important Breaking Bad characters ranked from intelligent to stupid – and Walter White only comes in at number 3

The 10 most important Breaking Bad characters ranked from intelligent

Breaking Bad is one of the best series for many reasons. In addition to the unique story and many iconic scenes, it is above all the characters around Walter White who try to survive step by step in Albuquerque’s drug swamp. Some are masters of their trade, others feel like they stumble over their own IQ in the morning. We ranked the most important characters according to how smart they behave.

10th place: Dean Norris as Hank Schrader

AMC

Hank (Dean Norris) in Breaking Bad

Nobody is as screwed up as Hank (Dean Norris). Walt’s jovial brother-in-law pays for his displayed straightforwardness with an almost childish naivety. Five seasons long Walt can dance on him with his drug business. After all, with his blinkers and quirks, such as his obsession with minerals, he makes for a lot of laughs.

9th place: Betsy Brandt as Marie Schrader

AMC

Betsy Brandt as Marie Schrader

Marie (Betsy Brandt), Hank’s wife, brings it all more sensitivity and flair for the many tricky situations in the series. She is one of those characters who often only appear on the fringes of the story, but get more than you want to give them credit for. Her behavior is clearly more considered than that of her husband. 8th place: Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman

AMC

Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman

Jesse (Aaron Paul) is a tricky case. Sometimes he can’t outdo himself with stupid things. Now and again he astounds, however, with a flash of inspirationthat no one expected. Especially at the beginning of the series he stumbles from one situation to the next. The darker the world around him, the more he has to look inside and figure out how to survive, which eventually leads us to El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. (MH)

7th place: Krysten Ritter as Jane Margolis

AMC

Jane (Krysten Ritter) in Breaking Bad

Jane (Krysten Ritter) may be a relapsing drug addict, but she is the most loving and honest person in Jesse’s life. Above all, she is able to recognize Walt’s weaknesses and dictate her terms to him. In the end, it’s addiction, not stupidity, that breaks her neck.

6th place: Robert Forster as Ed Galbraith

AMC

Robert Forster as Ed

Ed’s (Robert Forster) role in Breaking Bad is small but important. He is the only human who can hide Walt from his opponents. Just the fact that Don’t see geniuses like Gus or Mike Ed’s surgery shows his immense skill at secrecy.

5th place: Anna Gunn as Skyler White

AMC

Anna Gunn as Skyler White

Skyler (Anna Gunn) is one of those characters that should never be underestimated. She has neither a special gift like Walt nor the resources of a cartel. Instead of this manages them single-handedly family life in the White household and builds a business that works. Skyler demonstrates incredible willpower and finds ways to bring her ideas to fruition despite obstacles. (MH)

4th place: Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman

AMC

Bob Odenkrik as Saul Goodman

Actually he is a lawyer, but even more a sophisticated crook: Saul Goodman aka Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) sees through everyone around him immediately. He knows what they want and he knows how to fulfill their desires, or at least make it seem like he can fulfill them. A brilliant, intuitive and fearless mind, for which, however, now and then one’s own zeal becomes fatal. (MH)

3rd place: Bryan Cranston as Walter White

AMC

Bryan Cranston as Walter White

Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is Heisenberg, the ultimate mastermind. Almost. Walt is definitely smart, so smart that he detects a gap in the system and takes advantage of it. From the first episode, however, it is actually clear that he is only partially up to the task. But that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. In some ways, Walt is several steps ahead of the other characters – and sometimes he has no idea what he’s really dealing with and goes to extremes. A genius who becomes a monster. (MH)

2nd place: Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut

AMC

Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut

Mike Ehrmanntraut (Jonathan Banks) is washed with all waters. As an ex-cop, he deals with violence professionally, as a loyal follower and contract killer of Gus Fring, he does not quarrel with moral boundaries. He relies on sure plans, but acts with lightning speed, when it matters. Only his arrogance is his undoing in the end, because he doesn’t see Walt’s desperation as a threat.

1st place: Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring

AMC

Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring

Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) is the greatest genius in Breaking Bad. The intelligence with which he hides his drug business from the public while simultaneously portraying himself as a philanthropist of integrity and a kindly chicken seller is second to none. His foresight is so sharp because he’s the only character on the show to completely ignore personal concerns. He doesn’t want respect, he doesn’t want love, he’s not greedy or sadistic or selfish. He is pure efficiency.
