Texas Republican Greg Abbott campaigned in the midterm elections by sending buses of migrants to New York to get the attention of Democrats and the president.
Seeking a third term as governor in Texas Greg Abbott has been sending thousands of migrants from the state of Texas to New York since April. At least 6,000 migrants have left by bus.
Abbott, a Republican, is trying to criticize the Democratic leaders and the Democratic president Joe Biden an immigration policy that is more permissive than the policy of the previous presidential administration.
Mayor of New York City Eric Adams said on Monday that the city has received 250 migrants a day recently.
– This action is just mean and cruel to those who are trying to find a safe place for themselves, said Adams.
According to him, New York is doing its best to help thousands of immigrants.
Accommodation places in New York are filling up
However, the large number of migrants has meant that accommodation cannot be found for all migrants.
Venezuelan Edwin Enrique Jimenez Guaido says that after crossing the border, he was led to believe that help could be found in New York better than in other states, but no shelter was found.
– We left the shelter with my girlfriend when we were told we couldn’t get in. We came to another place and we don’t know what’s going on, we don’t know if we’re going to sleep on the street, says Guaido.
According to Reuters, getting a place to stay is limited by the fact that the couple is not married. He said that he left Venezuela six years ago because of the lack of food, medicine and peace in the country.
According to statistics, more migrants have been arrested during Biden’s presidency than during the former president’s tenure Donald Trump’s during. Some of those arrested have tried to land many times. During the Corona period, some of the migrants could not be deported, but they were allowed to go to other countries to apply for a residence permit.
