The vote is scheduled for Monday 29 and will take place in 22 of the country’s 26 provinces. The ruling coalition, already a large majority in the National Assembly, is considered the favorite for these gubernatorial elections. The main issues lie between the UDPS, the party of President Félix Tshisekedi, and its allies.

According to predictive analyzes which take into account the number of provincial deputies – the only major voters – and political strategies, the UDPS aims to win at least ten provinces, notably those in the center of the DRCtraditional strongholds of the party.

The capital, Kinshasa, where 31 candidates are vying to succeed Gentiny Ngobila, is also a priority target for the UDPS, as is Haut-Katanga, area of influence of the opponent Moïse Katumbi.

The rich and strategic province of Lualaba is coveted by outgoing governor Fifi Mansuka, an ally of Tshisekedi.

Still on the side of the UDPS allies, Modeste Bahati’s AFDC-A, despite a defeat in the primary for the presidency of the National Assembly, remains determined to keep South Kivu and is also targeting Tshopo.

The UNC of Vital Kamerhe, probable future president of the National Assemblyhopes to maintain its influence on central Kongo and is eyeing Haut-Uélé.

Finally, Jean-Pierre Bemba’s MLC targets the South Ubangi province and Equateur.

These elections will contribute to the redefinition of the Congolese political landscape for the current five-year term.
