SFI students do not learn everyday language

SFI students are a heterogeneous group with widely different backgrounds, but the teaching is rarely individualized, with the risk of some students losing motivation.

Many students also call for more realistic teaching that gives them a good basis for contacts with, for example, the children’s school and authorities, according to the School Inspectorate.

“At one activity, students state that after a relatively long period of study they still cannot communicate with, for example, staff in the grocery store,” it says in the report.

The authority also points to the markedly large differences in the quality of teaching. Of the 30 businesses reviewed, only six are judged to maintain good quality. The remaining 24 have deficiencies, three of which are judged to have major deficiencies. According to the School Inspectorate, it is serious. It is also not the first time SFI has received criticism.

“It is clear that komvux in SFI is in need of better conditions”, writes the authority and points out, among other things, that the percentage of teachers with authorization to teach in SFI is low: 55 percent.
