Potatoes for midsummer – quick grow in a pot

The fresh potato is one of the most awaited primes of the summer season. In order to get a harvest in time for midsummer, the tubers have to go into the ground already now.
– Time is running out, says gardener Linda Schilén.

A midsummer without fresh potatoes for herring is probably considered by many to be like a summer without sun. But even if you don’t have a garden plot, you can easily grow it at home.

– If you haven’t had time to grow your potatoes yourself, you can buy pre-grown varieties in the shops. It’s very clever.

Does not require very much nutrition

Seed potatoes grown in buckets or pots are a quick and easy way to get fresh potatoes. Linda shows you step by step how to proceed.

– First you need a bucket or pot. The pot needs to be wrapped in plastic, but I drain holes in the bottom so the water flows out. Potatoes don’t like to be wet. Then we start with soil. The soil does not need to be particularly nutritious.

– Potatoes are not a crop that requires a lot of nutrition. I base with about ten centimeters of soil. Then I take my pre-germinated and pre-grown plants and put them down. Then I fill in with more soil so that I almost cover. Not quite, but almost covers.

Do potatoes prefer dry soil, rather than really wet soil?

– Absolutely. But it should be even, light and moist. Then we will have to cup this all the time until we reach the height of the pot. So we fill in more soil all the time so that we cover. Now the cultivation is underway, says Linda Schilén in Nyhetsmorgon.
