UKRAINE. In Ukraine, Russia is continuing its advance, particularly in the east of the country, seizing several towns and setting new targets. Latest news, map and results of the war.

Ukraine is still and always under the fire of the bombardments of Russia. This Wednesday, July 6, 2022, the offensives continue in Donbass, a region in eastern Ukraine where fighting has been concentrated for several weeks. This border area between the two countries seeks to be conquered by Vladimir Putin and his men, the latter managing to push back the Ukrainian army. Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops have already laid down their arms, marking a clear setback as the war has been raging for five months. Now Russia is looking to advance towards central Ukraine in an attempt to seize Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

The first is a city which had around 110,000 inhabitants before the start of the war: only 23,000 would now live there. While daily bombardments affect the city, evacuations are organized. The Ukrainian authorities, however, claim to be able to contain the Russian assaults, about forty kilometers from the city. The objective of the Russian offensive: to control the last two large cities in the hands of Ukraine in the province of Donetsk, the second which makes up the Donbass after that of Lugansk, which the Russians claim to have in hand, which the Ukrainians deny. In this fifth month of war, the dynamic appears clearly in favor of Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine-Russia war: the map of the conflict

The observation has been undeniable for several days: Ukraine is retreating in its own country. The local fighters no longer manage to hold their positions under the multiple onslaughts of Russia. The latter has been concentrating its efforts for many weeks in the Donbass, this vast Ukrainian region located on the edge of its border. The Russian advance does not suffer from any challenge. On the latest map from the Institute for the Study of War, the red areas with the red borders correspond to Ukrainian territories now controlled by Russia.

Long defended, the flagship cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk have passed under the enemy flag, while Vladimir Putin’s army is now targeting Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, further east, two cities still held by Ukraine, as it is can be seen on the map below.

What is the outcome of the war between Ukraine and Russia?

The United Nations delivers every day (or almost) an assessment of the war in Ukraine. According to the latest data released by the organization on July 4, 4,889 civilians died since the war broke out. Of which, 4,554 are adults and 335 children. In addition, at least 6,263 people were injured. A balance sheet that lacks precision, however, as recognized by the UN itself: “the actual figures are considerably higher, because the receipt of information from certain places where intense hostilities took place have been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation.”
