Rodriguo Cuevas: the Iberian folk troublemaker

Rodriguo Cuevas the Iberian folk troublemaker

Sensuality screwed to the body, Rodrigo Cuevas, self-proclaimed “folk agitator” puts on his big golden clogs (and his garter belts) to dust off the traditional songs and rhythms of Asturias, his native region, despoiled by Francoism. Result: a flamboyant “folktronica”. Portrait of the Spanish singer, dancer, musician and performer Rodrigo Cuevas. Listen with headphones (3D audio).

Figurehead of the Spanish “folktronica”, Rodriguo Cuevas, 37, was born and still lives in the principality of Asturias. An autonomous community in northern Spain, bathed by the Atlantic and wedged between Cantabria and Galicia.

Since his first album Yo be the maga (2012), Rodriguo Cuevas dusts off everything in his path and especially the rhythms and traditional songs of northern Spain, which he dresses up with telluric basses and other electro sorceries.

Manual of Cortejo ( Manual for courtship), his 2nd album, alternates contemplative tracks and ecstatic climbs. It was produced with the collaboration of the Catalan musician and producer Raül Refree, who propelled the traditional music of the Iberian Peninsula into the heart of the 21st century (Rosalia, Rocío Márquez, Niño de Elche, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Lina)

On stage, as noted last June, at the Rio Loco festival, Rodriguo Cuevas brilliantly handles irony and provocation and is able to move from a burlesque register to the most poignant sensuality.

It was precisely after her flamboyant concert in Toulouse that Hortense Volle met the man who defines himself as a “folk agitator”.

SessionLab by Hortense Volle: a conversation in complete privacy and in 3D audio (spatialized sound).

A podcast to listen to, preferably, with headphones.
