Indie study was robbed 3 times during the development of its Soulslike – Now celebrates outstanding rating on Steam

Another Crab’s Treasure is a new Soulslike on Steam and PS5. Despite the sometimes adverse conditions in which the game was developed, it got off to a strong start this week.

What kind of game is this? Another Crab’s Treasure is a Soulslike with everything that goes with it: overpowering enemies, tough boss fights and a lot of dodging and parrying. In contrast to other representatives of the genre, it is not dark, but takes place in a colorful underwater world.

Players take on the role of the small hermit crab Krill, whose shell is confiscated by a nasty loan shark. So Krill goes in search of his shell and has to face numerous opponents. In order to be prepared for battle, krill can slip into numerous shells that have different armor values and special attacks.

Another Crab’s Treasure comes from the studio Aggro Crab, who previously took aim at the world of work, especially start-up culture, with their roguelite Going Under. It has been available on all common platforms since April 25, 2024.

“Does anyone have an office that isn’t made of glass?”

What was that about the three break-ins? On X, formerly Twitter, Aggro Crab reported several times about break-ins at their studio in Seattle. All three break-ins occurred while working on Another Crab’s Treasure. However, the developers took the situation with humor – and a healthy dose of crab memes.

On January 25, 2024, shortly after break-in number 3, they jokingly asked if anyone had an office left that wasn’t made of glass (via X).

But Another Crab’s Treasure not only had to contend with burglars, but also with strong competition: the release coincides with the hotly anticipated PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade and was just a day ahead of Manor Lords, the most wanted game on Steam.

So what about the crab soulslike?

“Chat, is this real?”

This is how the game arrives: Despite the adverse conditions, Another Crab’s Tresure got off to a strong start. This is probably thanks not least to the creative short videos with which the team drummed up advertising on TikTok. Clips in which the creators gave insights into their game received tens of thousands of views.

A video of Krill destroying a boss with a single shot from a huge gun has even been seen more than half a million times:

The studio not only seems to have a strong meme game, but also makes very good games. At least that’s what the reviews shared on the official X account on April 24th suggest. “Chat, is this real?” Aggro Crab comments on the ratings.

On Metacritic, the PC version has 79 out of 100 points, the PS5 version has 78. The idiosyncratic Soulslike is even better received by players: On Steam, Another Crab’s Treasure has 96% recommendations as “extremely positive”.

  • TheSonOfJazzy: “A phenomenal twist on the soulslike genre. You almost forget it’s a Souls game until a crab decides to insta-kill you and you lose 26k microplastics and hate the universe. It is wonderful.”
  • +Coconut~Chan+: “[…] This is my first Soulslike and I love it so much. […]“
  • Sheldowski: “The game is surprisingly good!! At first I thought it would be some kind of fun, short Souls game with crabs, but in the end it not only gives us a very interesting and funny story, but the philosophy, criticism, soundtrack and visuals are cool! […]“
  • Is there anything to complain about? Yes, there is. The negative reviews mainly point out that in the eyes of some the game simply feels unfinished and janky. It’s easy to get stuck somewhere and the bosses’ animations don’t always show their next attacks.

However, even the critics seem to mostly agree that Another Crab’s Treasure has potential.

On X, the team celebrates the positive reviews and the successful launch. However, the players shouldn’t be left out: bug fixes are already in the works, as the studio promises in a short update on Steam.

Will you give the unusual Soulslike a chance? Have you perhaps even tried it? Feel free to tell us in a comment.

Cute visuals with crisp fights are your thing? Then the new co-op game from the makers of Don’t Starve could be something for you. Rotwood has been in early access since April 24, 2024. We already played the roguelite for you in February:
