Protesters in Peru demand new elections

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

For the second day in a row, thousands of people protested in Peru’s capital, Lima. Since the country’s former president Pedro Castillo was indicted and forced to resign, the demonstrations instead target his successor Dina Boluarte. Many have trekked for days from small communities in the Andes.

The crowds demand that new elections be held as soon as possible and not next year as planned. Rural residents see it as a coup that Pedro Castillo was ousted from the presidency in December. He was the country’s first leader with a poor background in the mountains in the north.

Hundreds injured

The ousted Castillo is under arrest and will be charged with sedition, after trying to dissolve Congress as part of last year’s power struggle in the country.

According to the AP news agency, 55 people have been killed and 700 injured in the past month’s clashes with security forces.
