In China, however, the story is known for over a thousand years and has been filmed several times. The legend of Hua Mulan comes from a Chinese poem popularly known between 420 and 589 AD spread. Here, too, Mulan goes to war for her father and fights in the service of the Empire for twelve years.

As early as 1927, the ballad of Mulan was recorded in the Silent film Hua Mulan Joins the Army interpreted cinematically. To date there have been fifteen film adaptations, seven TV series and other literary works and video games. Most productions come from China.
