That’s what 1989’s Road House is about

Like Doug Liman’s looser remake adaptation, the original follows a bouncer on his job at a bar. Dalton (Patrick Swayze) is not a thug per se and also has a university degree in philosophy, which is why he is a smart loner as a somewhat atypical bouncer who uses violence as a last resort.

In the run-down road house “Double Deuce” he becomes responsible for the safety of the guests of the disreputable shop. The problems here seem bigger than elsewhere, because Criminals come and go regularlywho also cause chaos on behalf of real estate shark Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara).

The original Road House is that good

In our comparison of the two films, the original is used as a gateway into the bouncer business “in a wonderfully exaggerated world full of silly one-liners, pathetic fist fights and cheesy sentimentality“, which is constantly accompanied by a soundtrack of catchy songs. Unmistakable charm, even with seemingly absurd elements, is evident here pure 80s atmosphere.

The new Road House from 2024, however, only touches on the successful elements of the old film, it is said. Without the captivating 80s character of the original, the new edition largely degenerates into an interchangeable glossy blockbuster with a great focus on the action.
